Shea butter is a fat extracted from the nut of the African shea tree (Vitellaria paradoxa). It is a unique product in west Africa and deemed as something holy by the locals.

The fat of the nut requires the tree to be 45 to 50 years old in order to be extracted. Every ripe tree can only produce 15 to 20 kg of nuts. To produce 1 kg of fat, it requires 3 to 4 kg of nuts and 20 to 30 working hours of the local women. Thus, this fat is rather precious and earns the name of “sacred soft gold” in Africa.
